This is it, my homeplace at Christmas

December 25th, 2007

Jackie sent me this photograph of our home, now hers, decorated with extraordinary good, New England taste. Old houses in Maine are just this way, restrained, white and unadorned other than their innate elegance of form. I have not seen that house at Christmas since 1961. Thank you, Jackie. I love what you’ve done.

I want to wish you very Merry Christmas. I’ve enjoyed reading your blog this year and getting to know you.

Thank you both. I am so happy when I hear from people who read what I write, and of course you both know I read what you write, too.

Nice picture but shouldn’t there be more snow?

The MORE SNOW comes in January and February. And what a MORE SNOW it can be.

Judith, are you a little homesick? Your house looks like one that holds memories over decades. A nice gift!

I am not homesick, but I do like to remember old times. Maine isn’t the only old time I remember. Remembering how things were, what I thought at the time and what I think now are part of growing my mind. As I understand better what was, I am learning what was real. It helps construct today.

As I said in another post, there were loads of appalling memories of those Maine winters. I never was romantic about 8 foot snows. Maine is much more memorable to me in summer with blue skies interrupted by thunderstorms.

I loved the snow in Syracuse–but then I was only there 6 years, not long enough to get tired of it. Somehow though the sun of San Diego never seems to be right for Christmas. Sleds don’t come under the trees here.

Judith, I grew up partly in Nova Scotia and, just like Maine, the winters can be absolutely brutal. My mom still lives there and so I get the weather report every day! This has been a very snowy winter so far. Love the picture!

My sister has two homes there, one on a piece of rock on the sea and another inland with gardens and an orchard. There must be something besides the weather up there.

I must post my tasters someday here. Yours were pretty cute.
