Landmarks

November 18th, 2007

Yesterday was the completion of seven years of living in Umbria. In seven years, they say, all the cells of your body are changed except your brain cells. That means I am all Italian except my brain. Most of my friends could tell you that. Not that Italy hasn’t altered my brain landscape in seven years. It must look more like the Apennines than the Appalachians now.

Today is eg’s birthday and my gift didn’t get there. Internet commerce is terrific, but when it doesn’t work, it might as well not exist. So, will everyone please wish her a happy year full of success and pleasure?

And please, back me up and tell her that Delma wants her to go get her Italian presents, and she is making Delma weep.

Congratulations on making THE BIG 7 — threshold, supposedly, of culture shock. I’m glad you’re here!

Thank you, Laurie. Me too, and may I find a way to make enough money to stay. If I were to go back, I’d be as much an immigrant as anyone who landed on Ellis Island.

You forgot to encourage eg to do the right thing.

Well, I will then. Mam’zelle eg, joyeux anniversaire! (and do what your mother is telling you to!)

And bravissima you are for having transplanted your entire body and most of your brain to a different country and thrived.

Congratulations. I\’m sure it has been an enterprise to change your mind and way of living. I don\’t know if your body is Italian, however your brain has a marvellous ability to work among so different ones. I love differences. I\’m sure our Italian friends in common have much esteem and good feelings towards you. You are considered a very clever and nice woman with original and creative ideas and way of doing. When shall we drink together to celebrate the event?

Any day, my dear Gianna. You know how happy celebrations make me.

Sorry I missed the big anniversary and birthday, but I offer best wishes all around.

And please, eg, don’t make Delma suffer.
