That's funny, I was thinking that your post described my life a bit.

We don't watch tv and we've taken to playing board games at least once a week, just the two of us or with our group of pals. With the Game Night crew, we normally order something to save the hostess from having to cook, but I'm tired of take-out (unhealthy + expensive), so the next time it's my turn to host, I'm going to buy pasta and some good jarred sauces, and a few bags of lettuce and baby spinach for a side.

You'd be surprised how expensive board games can be! Geir Rune, our Norwegian pal, has the collecting bug, so his stash of board / card games is impressive. Peter's not quite so bad, but he does tend to get enthusiastic about a game and collect the whole set of expansions. The latest passion for this lot is Arkham Horror, a complex and rather baroque board game that is based on Lovecraft's works. It came out about 20 years ago, but it still is quite gripping. Time flies and you forget all your worries when you play games with a group of friends.

I've never had much call for battecarne in general, but I always thought they looked very impressive, esp. combined with a Chinese cleaver. I almost bought a cleaver when I was last in a asian store, but then, I don't need to chop chickens in two at all these days, so I passed. And where would I store such a thing.

Still, cleavers do look rather nice in a threatening way... and you can use the blunt side to battecarne too!

Well, sure, but both my cleaver and my battecarne are stuck fast to my magnetic knife rack!

Back along we used to have waffle suppers with savory things on them, like mushrooms sauce, or pancake or crepe suppers with anything. Tomato soup and grilled cheese is pretty homey thing and nice. We none of us had any money, just the urge to have fun.
