Jeans
March 7th, 2007
Jeans have been an almost impossible wearable for the imperfect of body for several years now. Waistines have plunged, legs have narrowed, appliqués of everything from Swarovski crystals to weird ethnic embroideries have confused the meaning of jeans.
Today the Telegraph published an article that claims to have solved the jeans worry by saying which jeans are for whom. I’m not so sure. The main problem I found was that they identify as high waisted a jean that starts a good 3″ below the natural waist. By today’s standards that may work as a definition, but bodies don’t adopt current standards.
A bosomy type, a curvy Sofia Loren, many women currently accepted as gorgeous would look awful in that waistline because it sets an impossible proportion between top and bottom.
What do you think? Have they left out some important types or am I nuts? Just wearing jeans is a statement for me here and now. I’ve found absolutely no jean adapted to me and so I still wear my old standard classic or straight cut jeans and hope they’ll last this trend. Even if there were mom jeans here I couldn’t and wouldn’t wear them. I don’t have that butt-sprung shape at all. Mom jeans don’t get a mention at all in that article, presumably because they have little to do with style.
Later today I have to go try on the challenging Donna Karan black straight leg jeans. I should have a drink first, but I’m on a diet. Maybe I should start anti-depressives first.

Jeans have crippled me financially for years. I have so many pairs in my wardrobe I simply never wear. Searching for the perfect pair is like searching for the holy grail, it ain’t gonna happen.
I love the idea of high waisted flares, but like you say, what exactly do they mean by a high waist? Looking at the photo of Kate Moss those certainly stop below her navel, well at least where my navel would be.
My solution? All winter long I have been in leggings and over-sized jumpers. Perfect on both fat days and those few occasions when I’m feeling lean(ish).

I think for something more like “Mom” jeans, that don’t cost a lot, the best stores are the more conservative places like LL Bean and Eddie Bauer or, at a department store, look for something like Bill Blass or Liz Claiborne. Many more trendy places have styles they say are high but aren’t really, or are made of less sturdy materials that don’t flatter or hold up very well. There are also denim trousers that are a little more dressy and generally have a fairly high waist.

I think I better stay out of this discussion or you guys will hate my guts. :0
For me, anything that ends above my hip bones is too high-waisted. Nuff said.

Ahh well, to me jeans should be the leveler. Something everyone can wear and afford. It’s getting ridiculous out there.
Anybody who has any fat whatsoever cannot wear those low jeans without looking muffiny or worse. So guess who is not fat here?
WG I think you are lean as can be if you only have 5 extra pounds. Unless it is all on one place?
eg as a mom I still can’t do those mom jeans! They have big butts. I could consider a trouser made of denim, but I am unsure.
