I live in a dump
August 10th, 2007
If you are a sensitive soul, come back in a day or two.
The following is what happens when you live in Italy and your neighbors are having the roof replaced, then comes August and the roofers go on a two week vacation. One night after midnight the heavens might open and you may spend hours finding buckets, moving furniture, taking down paintings, throwing down Ralph Lauren white bath towels and yelling, “Not that much rain! No one asked for that much rain!”
That wall lamps was flowing like a fountain. It carries 240 volts and has a 200 watt bulb inside. That water in the bucket has run through the attics and it and everything it is in smells like mouse pee.
I was going to spare you, but maybe you’re wondering why we aren’t eating well lately? I asked the insurance guy this morning how to get rid of the stench and he said open a window. Right. Can you tell I’m bitter?

Oh my goodness. That’s awful. Hopefully with the heat things will dry up quickly. I’ve never smelled Vieille Eau de Souris, but it sounds awful. Eeeeesh.

Cara Judith, I am so sorry to read this–this has been going on for so long and now this disaster. Palma’s right though–all things do pass (as I keep telling myself.) Mouse pee???
Lots of hugs from far away.

THERE IS NO HEAT! The storms brought cool and wet weather. Thing is, before I felt I had a cute and comfy home, but when it is all pulled to pieces in a hurry it just is a dump! And since it is August, I can’t even hope to get estimates for repairs. Required estimates for repairs. Argh! Even the drycleaners is closed until September. All those dripped and damaged walls are not painted, but are colored plaster from Roussillon and it has to be taken off and replaced. Argh!

How the hell could any contractor be so neglectful? If they were going on vacation why didn’t they finish the job first or cover the whole dang place with blue (or whatever color is in fashion) tarps!!!! Good luck with this unwanted gift.

Well this is all a bit crappy isn’t it?
What sort of responsibility will your neighbour have toward the cost of damages in your place? More to the point, how easy will it be extracting the money from him/her?
Hope it all sorts itself out and that you can stay dry and warm in the interim.

The works are insured and the insurance theoretically will pay, but since it is August, all the workers are on holidays. I can’t even get estimates. Obviously, they won’t pay for what I do myself.
