Hands off our food!
January 8th, 2008
Here in the International Herald Tribune is a review of the newly published book, “In Defense of Food.”
I’ve been reading reviews of the book and its ideas for over a week now. I think I am sort of on the same page with the author, and I do try to get people to think about real food as much as I can without being insulting. Many people, having been convinced that cooking real food takes too much time, do not want to have the boxes pried out of their hands, but you know that semi-homemade is full of bad stuff. Don’t you?

The fight can be frustrating. When I first returned to the US I made a pumpkin pie with fresh pumpkin.
My mother ate the pie and said it was very good. She then asked me why I would go to all the trouble of cooking fresh pumpkin when the can mix was so available….
My heart sank.

Expats here will often walk past shelves full of squash or pumpkin and ask, “Where can you buy pumpkin in a can?” I have nothing against it at all, because otherwise the season for these would be short, but how have we forgotten that fresh is good and not all that much trouble?
My British foodies are complaining about their January tomatoes being pallid and tasteless. I think there is no such thing in most northern countries as a January tomato.

Frantic Fanny, my daughter did a pass through Saturday evening and we had a light supper at a new restaurant. The owner is from here, studied elsewhere and returned to open her own “Bakery” with meals. Her fresh only has surpassed all expectations. We enjoyed the veggie (I dislike cuties words) pizza of spinach, goat cheese, toasted walnuts with fresh sliced tomatoes and I think other stuff. Frances said she shuttered at the word pizza as she hasn’t been brave enough to eat what we call pizza since her return. She is having difficulty with substitute stuff we call food. We sent you a soul food professional and you return a snob!

Who was more soulful than Edna Lewis? And she believed in fresh is best.
You just send those gals back in Umbria and we’ll go food shopping! Also, go to this post:

and Fanny can make her own pizza and she’ll love it as long as she doesn’t load it down with too much stuff.
