Are you a curious type?

I am. The magazine La Cucina Italiana is celebrating 80 years of publication by releasing pdf files of the issues Secember 1929, 1939 and 1959. Three very particular times in world history and in Italian history. They are lengthy downloads, so I haven’t had a good read yet, but I suspect that at least some of the publications must be worth translating.

It has long been my premise that you can know a lot more about the history of a country if you read their magazines than if you read what they allowed the newspapers to publish. In the end, kings and dictators and social experiments come to an end, but people and their lives are real. Even with the intervention of a terrible war, the Italian of 1959 resembles more the Italian of 1929 than a Swiss of any year.
