Puglia the beautiful, Puglia the charming
This is the trullo, the famous Puglian trullo that almost everyone knows about and that has been declared by UNESCO a part of the heritage of all mankind.
I knew about trulli and I had seen many photographs of them. I didn’t even make any special plans to go where they were most numerous. Of course I wanted to see one. Who wouldn’t? I was totally unprepared to have my breath taken away and tears come to my eyes as we saw the beginnings of Trulli land. “It’s like Ireland with elves!” I cried. Late March had greened the land, fluffy clouds scudded over a Madonna blue sky and the trulli lay dozing among the shallow hills.
I suppose that this too is something that can only happen once.
Beautiful–the photo, the sentiment, everything. This happened to me the first time I saw the Riace Bronzes down here in Reggio Calabria. I had seen photos, and yes, they’re impressive, blah blah…but in person. Just. Wow. Thanks for sharing!
It was great to finally meet a fellow blogger and I’m glad you enjoyed your visit down here. If you come down again you can stay at my place and meet Nello and Mara. I think it’s interesting to see what another expat thinks of where I live. Oh, and the weather will be better next time!!

Jeff, do you know of a weather history site on Puglia? Typical annual everything? I would love to meet more people in Puglia and I am finding not much real info available, just mostly repetitions of the same stuff from page to page. I would especially love to cook alongside a local person.
Sognatrice, there is a similar smash in the head experience with the bronzes at Pergola, le Marche. I just fell onto a bench and thought about what I was seeing. Rome and Romans came to life before me.
All, I have a month’s worth of things to say about Puglia, from a 5 day trip that included 2 days driving to and fro. What a place.

Now it’s definite….we simply MUST get down to Puglia! Did you drive? I think I’ve read it’s possible to stay in one of these trulli…sounds magical!
Yes, we drove. And you can rent a trullo, but I didn’t want to because they don’t have windows. Some have a square addition, which name I don’t recall and then you can have a window.
They are in a particular area which includes, but is not exclusive to Alberobello. That is like the Trulliest of the trulli. Quite touristed. I liked where we were, except for the rain and the narrowest streets. I think the rain fell everywhere, though, even the trulli.
It was one of the nicest trips I have ever done. (I bought 5 liters of the most wonderful DOP/DOC oil.)
