Name that tool! (now with answer)

What do you think this is?  I guessed completely wrong when I saw it at the Slovenian-owned grocery store.  A hint: nothing about how it was photographed is meant to help you.

It even has a little latch to keep it closed.

It even has a little latch to keep it closed.

and it also opens wide

and it also opens wide

I had an idea when I saw it but when I read the tag it was something entirely other.  I tried to use it in the way I had imagined it was used, and it didn’t work.

The first person to correctly name what it is will receive something from me.  I don’t know what yet, depends on where they are!

The first to answer correctly “tomato slicer” was Sandy.  Come on down, Sandy.  Send me an email so we can discuss a prize.

I am frankly amazed that there is enough need for 1/8″ thick tomato slices to justify manufacturing this tool.  Who knows.  Maybe it will end up my fave.

That was my guess, although I didn’t know why it would latch. Actually, I still don’t know why it latches unless it is to keep it closed and therefore smaller when stored.

Egg slicer?

Is it for crushing the shell on a boiled egg? I don’t know why you would need a tool for that of course!

I also thought it was an egg slicer or a tomato slicer. Holds the item sturdy and gives you the little “slots” to put the knife if to get even slices.

Looks like an egg (hard boiled) slicer.

I also tried to use it as salad tongs. The salad fell out.

Is it for holding onions so you can slice the things??

Sure looks odd!

StephJune 14th, 2009 at 20:15

How about a lemon or orange juicer? Keeps the seeds out?

EvanJune 14th, 2009 at 21:21

Someone else already got it. It’s a tomato holder and you cut through the slots with a knife or a slicer.

JaneJune 21st, 2009 at 04:53

Ok what is it? We give up.

JaneJune 21st, 2009 at 04:56

Oops–just went back and read your revised post. Tomato slicer–we all need one.
