Friggitelli

friggitelli

My mother grew these in Maine when I was a child. She and I were the only ones who liked them. I remember that sometimes she made a frying pan full of them with garlic and I am sure corn oil, because she did not use olive oil in those days. Nobody did except maybe Dean Martin or Perry Como.

They’re still that good, but alas, I can only eat three or four at a time and this bunch is lasting forever.

Funny about the olive oil as my mother always used it and we were in Connecticut. Also, my grandparents, aunts and other relatives in New York always used it. My grandfather always brought my mother a case of olive oil and a case or two of good canned tomatoes when he journeyed to “the woods”.

Must have been some Italian types in there! My mother was irredeemably English but had a close Italian friend. Ergo friggitelli, but no suspicious oil.

Gil, on thinking about this, I’ve decided that probably your mother was Perry Como.
